It’s not too terribly sizeable in British pounds sterling, but convert it to Philippine peso and it’d be enough to see me through Christmas.
All I need to do is to stay streaky with some well-timed items and I reckon I can bank enough to keep me as self-sustainable as I can be. Maybe it can even lead to some bigger writing work for actual publications. Lord knows I wanna get on PaulTan or TopGear.ph or somewhere.
Guess it’s time to do real contributor work. Or diversify like my classmates.

Onl y if you’ re dead-set on making this a gig AND you can do both newswrit ing and features at most daily.
Really, it’s kinda tough calling Jalopnik a mere “ blog” . It’s more like a magazine, but not in the same way R&T or C&D or TopGear or EVO are magazines. I mean look at R&T: it’s basically Jalopnik wit hout the fun and zaniness that Kinja enables (ironic given that R &T was on Kinja before) and with some more polish.
I can stay on DT for now because exchange rates favour me in a HUGE way, and thanks to LaLD, I had enough of an entry point to just go up the admins and ask for money. Not everyone wants to drive along that path or cares enough — and frankly the pay rate is supposed to be bigger back then befo re the pandemic struck, so monetization is still relatively weaksauce.
Oppo’s first function i s to be the meeting-place for the core readerbase. If it doesn’t succeed at that, it won’ t survive. No financial incentive to blog will ever repla ce that. I would know.

This is just my ungrateful third-world arse being truly, deeply happy that there are big numbers on my screen. If there’s an implication that I’m trying to sell these people on DT, know this much: I’d rather stay on Opposite-lock and build that pla ce up.

I’m not sure that OPPO works as a completely standalone version of all that, though. G/O sees the group as being too small to pull enough clicks to support the business model they are committed to. Hence, “There’s The Door... Let us see your profile going through it...
“Subscription” doesn’t work... I dunno. Seems like a rock and a hard place as we say in ‘Murica. If we can draft off DT’s investment, even with the warts? Seems like the best of bad options.
I can foresee standalone “hosting” BTW, but I don’t how that’s long-terms sustainable without some substantial investment.

More or less after a month, you get pounds on your PayPal directly proportional to how many bumps (stars/hearts) and total clicks a post gets. There’s no exact formula (not one that I’ve asked about anyway), but as long as your timing is great and the writeup is brilliant, it will get on the global front page, where that post is sure to generate income.

Mostly almost 30K clicks on the best performers, bumps of around 60 to 80 . Rare to see though, mostly because I do n’ t really write often enough to just keep chucking material at it (but when it lands, it’s a guaranteed payday) . Every article must count for me because coursework takes top priority. It will be a different affair for others.

Pretty cool. OPPO posts somewhat regularly get that, but I think that’s in large part due to Kinja’s great SEO.
